Client: Dare County
The Bowsertown Landfill is a ± 14 acre landfill located in the Town of Manteo, Dare County North Carolina. This project began in 2005 as a Manteo Rotary Club initiative to “reclaim the landfill” and has involved site planning with the Coastal Studies Institute, Citizens of Dare County and Manteo and Students from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The site accepted general municipal solid waste from the early 1960's until 1982 and served as a transfer station from 1982 until 2007.
Bowsertown has been selected as the first site for the State of North Carolina Division of Waste Management’s new Pre-Regulatory Landfill Trust Fund. Quible was awarded the work in 2008 after a competitive bid process initiated by the County. Since that time, Quible has worked closely with the Pre-Regulatory Landfill Unit and the County to assess the environmental impacts resulting from the landfill and is currently in the contaminant Delineation Phase with installation of monitoring wells and the first round of soil and groundwater sampling activities completed as of September 2010.
Much of the assessment and report formatting for the new Pre-Regulatory Landfill Unit has been developed while Quible has been actively working to assess the environmental impacts at Bowsertown.
